Hello NCA Bears! It’s Monday, which means it’s time to start a new week. No matter what you were dealt last week, it’s another opportunity to start fresh, to have a positive outlook and set some goals. When was the last time you set a goal for yourself? Whether it’s academic related or not, goals are what keeps you going. Having goals for things we want to do and working towards them is an important part of being human. Keep this in mind though, the path toward reaching your goals may not always run smoothly or be easy but the feeling of achieving that goal makes it all worth it in the end. Goals give us a sense of meaning and purpose, they point us in the direction we want to go and get us interested and engaged, all of which are good for our overall happiness. During your next monthly contact, you will be working on adding your identified goals to your 2022-2023 Short Term & Long Term Goal Setting data view. Don’t worry if you aren’t sure what your goals are just yet, we’re here to help! We’ll be checking in on your progress throughout the year. If you’re interested in getting a head start, click on your data views from your homepage and search for “2022-2023 Short Term & Long Term Goal Setting”. Attendance - Attendance is a vital component of our school and must be consistently recorded. Attendance runs from Sunday-Saturday and will be collected through the form below each week. This will be recorded based on the attendance verification form AND lesson completion and will be confirmed by our Attendance Coordinator. Reminders will be sent each week to ensure you receive proper credit for the week. Complete your weekly attendance HERE! Also, please be sure you are selecting the correct Attendance Monitor to submit your attendance to. The name of your Attendance Monitor can be found on your homepage in the top right corner. Driver’s Permit & License - Are you planning on getting your driver's permit or license soon? If so, you’ll need to bring the DMV Certification of Attendance - Form 301 - with you. This needs to be submitted to Cassandra Appleton prior to your appointment. Due to the large number of requests, she is unable to take last minute requests. Please plan on submitting your request with plenty of time before your appointment (at least 48 hours in advance). Communication - An important requirement that we have here at NCA is a monthly contact requirement with one of our NCA staff members. In order to meet this requirement, it’s important that you have a working number listed so we know how to contact you. If you do not have a cell phone or if you are unable to use your cell phone, please be sure to webmail your teacher so you can meet in LiveLesson. Google Voice is also another great way to hold these calls. Learn more about setting up a free Google Voice account here. 2023 Nevada Reading Week Art Contest - The Nevada Reading Week Committee needs your help with the annual Student Art Contest! Students from districts across Nevada have the exciting opportunity to participate in a state-wide art contest to create the logo for Nevada Reading Week. Last year one of our NCA Bears won this contest and had her design showcased on all of the Nevada Reading Week merchandise and communications across the state. You can see her design in one of the attached documents. The theme this year is One World, Many Stories. If you would like to submit an entry, please review the attached documents for more information. AP Academy Agreement - If you are taking an AP course this year, please be sure to review the AP Academy Agreement in your data views. This must be signed by all students and caretakers of students enrolled in AP courses. If you have any questions, you are welcome to reach out to our College and Career Readiness Specialist, Mr. Smith. Back to School Events! - Meet your NCA teachers, become more familiar with NCAl, take home some resources for the school year, and have fun as we kick off the new school year! There will be games, free resources, and community representatives on hand! We will also have a Q and A panel where you can ask the staff and community members questions! Add your questions in advance here! Hello NCA Bears!! Are you ready for the 4th week of school? Hard to believe that after this week we will have been in school for a month already! Hopefully it’s been a smooth start to the school year for you. If not, please be sure to reach out for support. We’re here to help you! We want to help you be successful here! As shared previously, today is the first day our escalation system is activated. You will begin seeing icons with a status of On Track, Approaching Alarm, or Alarm on your homepage. Enrolled students are in one of these three statuses at all times. Each of these categories is based on several criteria outlined in the School Handbook and is a combination of measures that indicate if a student is demonstrating adequate participation in the program. This includes actual attendance hours, lesson and assessment completion rates and the amount of communication with the teacher. Please know that our system automatically updates these statuses, it is not something that we manually do on our end. Temporary Zeros - Starting Wednesday, your teachers will be adding in temporary zeros for all overdue assignments. Entering of temporary zeros will occur each Monday and will be added to assignments that are a week (or more) overdue. Please know that this is not something done to penalize students, it’s a practice we use to help students understand where their grade would be should they choose not to submit that particular assignment. Grades are not finalized until the semester has been completed and temporary zeros are removed once the assignment is completed. Survey Participation - We are constantly thinking about ways that we can better support you and your academics. We want to do everything we can to help you be successful here and to get you across that finish line. Please take a few minutes to fill out the survey below. Your feedback is invaluable and will be used to put initiatives in place to aid in our growth and improvements. All responses will be submitted anonymously. You will be asked to participate in this survey multiple times this school year, which will allow us to track our growth and improvements. Help us, help you! NCA Clubs! - School clubs are a great way to get involved and connect with your peers about common interests. At NCA, we have two different types of clubs you can join, Pearson Global Clubs OR NCA in-house Clubs. Information about Pearson Global Clubs was added to our weekly webmail on Monday, November 8th. It can also be found in the Virtual Library. NCA in-house clubs are created by NCA staff or students and advised by a NCA staff member. Take a look at the current NCA in-house club offerings below. If interested, please complete the form below by August 26th. The club advisor will reach out to you to provide more information about meeting time and location (virtual). Important note: Club members must maintain a 70% or higher in all courses. Grades will be checked quarterly. NCA Clubs - Join here! Preferred Pronouns: Pronouns are a way for us to identify who we are apart from our names. It's how we are referred to in conversation. Using someone's correct pronoun shows that you care and respect their gender identity. At NCA, everyone is accepted and welcomed, no matter what their pronouns are. We want to take that extra step to show this by adding your pronoun to your Pearson Online Classroom (previously Connexus) overview page. This will appear in parenthesis next to your name, where your nickname is if you have one listed. If you would like your pronouns included, please complete the following survey so we can update your account. Important note: If you provided us with this information last year and there is no change needed, you do not need to submit this form again. Hi! My pronouns are... August Community Board: WOW!! Check out our August Community Board! Thank you for taking time to share! If you haven't had a chance, it's not too late! We still have a week and a half left in August. Post HERE!
