Hello NCA Bears! Believe it or not, today is the last day of January! Tomorrow will begin the celebration of Black History Month. Black History Month is a yearly celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the monumental role played in U.S. history. Black History Month started as a week-long celebration in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson. In 1976 professor Albert Broussard turned it into a month-long celebration and since then every U.S. President designated the month of February as Black History Month. “‘You can learn a lot from history, and learning about particular achievements of people who have struggled under great adversity can be tremendously inspiring to all people, not just African Americans, but all groups, whether it be from women or the LGBTQ+ community,’ Broussard said. Black History Month not only highlights important historical figures, he said, but is an educational tool that teaches individuals about their history.” To learn more about the origin of Black History Month, click here. Are you waking up each morning with a smile on your face? Are you trying to find the positive in every situation? It’s not easy but it’s extremely important and can change your overall mood and outlook. Take a look at the top reasons to smile each day: Smiling helps you live longer. Smiling relieves stress. Smiling elevates your mood. Smiling is contagious. Smiling boosts the immune system. Smiling may lower blood pressure. Smiling reduces pain. Smiling suggests success. Smiling helps you stay positive.Your smile can be seen (and heard) from miles away and has the potential to not only brighten your day but brighten someone else's day as well. So why not give it a try?? Take a second, even if you’re by yourself, and SMILE and notice the immediate effects. Keep holding that smile as you read through the updates below: ACT Boot Camp - Our LAST ACT Boot Camp is coming soon! February 12th - Final ACT Boot Camp for the 2021-2022 School Year February 21st - No School - Presidents' Day Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great week! Hello NCA Families! Yesterday we had off in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Though his birthday is on January 15th, it is observed on the third Monday of January. This day is meant to honor all of the achievements of Martin Luther King Jr. One way I’d like to honor him is by sharing one of my favorite quotes of his with you. “If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” Life can be difficult, as we all know, but as long as we keep moving forward, we will make it through these challenges. Just remember, you are strong! You are capable of amazing things. You can do anything you put your mind to. Don’t give up! As we head into this four day week, please take a minute to review the following updates below. Zero Policy - As many of you are aware, your teachers enter in temporary zeros on a weekly basis for assignments that are a week or more overdue. This practice will continue throughout the second semester. Along with this, your teachers will also be entering permanent zeros for any portfolios that are two weeks overdue. Please note, “promise documents” and blank documents should not be uploaded any longer. The permanent zero will allow you to move forward with your lessons. Please also keep in mind that these assignments should still be completed and turned in as they are weighted heavily on your grade. ACT Boot Camp - Our LAST ACT Boot Camp is coming soon! Because of this, we have developed a Parent and Family Engagement Policy and Compact for Nevada Connections Academy. The Policy and Compact explains how the school plans to work with parents to review and improve programs and it describes how to participate in planning these programs. Federal law requires us to distribute the Parent and Family Engagement Policy and Compact to parents and teachers. Attached is a copy of the Board-approved Parent and Family Engagement Policy and Compact for Nevada Connections Academy. You can also find a copy of this document in the School’s handbook on the Virtual Library at this link: https://www.connexus.com/library/launch.aspx?id=90432 or you can access it directly by clicking this link:https://www.connexus.com/library/launch.aspx?id=46203. We value your involvement and urge you to take the time to read this policy. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Welcome to the 2nd Semester of the 2021-2022 School Year and a BIG welcome to those that are new to NCA! A new semester means a fresh start! Whether you ended the semester the way you had hoped to or you struggled to meet those goals that you set for yourself, EVERYONE gets that new start. A chance to be better than you were last semester and that new start begins TODAY! A consistent routine is directly connected to your success this semester. Are you waking up at the same time every day? Completing the required amount of lessons per week? Giving yourself time to decompress from the day? These are all key to helping you reach your goals. Read through and try out the following tips below to make this semester the best one yet: -Set a time you’d like to wake up each morning and start the school day. This can be challenging when you first start but stick with it and it’ll get easier. Same for when you'd like to head to bed. Giving yourself enough time to sleep will help you focus on your daily lessons and assignments. -Find a spot where you can focus and have the least amount of distractions. Keep yourself organized and when the day is over, always prepare for the next day so you're ready to go. -Get ahead early in the semester. If you can’t get ahead, stay on track. Completing at least 28.5 lessons per week (the weekly lesson requirement) will help you obtain this goal. -Connect with your teachers on a regular basis. Whether this be via phone, webmail or LiveLesson, they are available to help and answer questions. It’s essential that you make a connection with each one to find out what's needed in order to be successful in their class. -Review our school website! Updates are made on a regular basis. Be sure to check out your individual teacher’s websites as well. These are just a few to start you off on the right track. If you’d like more, let us know!
