Hello NCA Bears! As we venture through these two days of January, I want you to take a minute to think about how you’ve been starting each of your days. Are you waking up each morning ready to take on a new day? Are you starting the day off with a positive attitude? It’s not always easy but it’s extremely important and can change your overall mood, outlook and can turn a sour day into a much sweeter one! Here are a few things you can do each morning to guarantee that you’ll be starting each day with a positive attitude: Plan your day Make your bed Stretch Smile more Be kind to yourself and others Attendance - Be sure to get your attendance submitted for the week by filling out the form below. To ensure you are getting credit for the week, please make sure you are selecting the correct homeroom teacher. The name of your homeroom teacher can be found on your homepage. Click here ------> WEEKLY ATTENDANCE FORM It's the same form each week so we recommend you save it and set a reminder as this is a requirement. Failure to fill out this form could result in you being marked absent for the entire week. ACT Boot Camp - Our LAST ACT Boot Camp is coming soon! If you weren’t able to attend the first boot camp OR if you’d like to join again, please sign-up HERE. Deadline to register is Friday, February 17th. ACT boot camps are averaging a 30-40% boost in your overall ACT score! REMINDER: All students must take the ACT exam in order to get a high school diploma. Typically you take this during your Junior year. More information regarding testing dates and locations will be shared soon! Truancy Process - To maximize student learning, regular attendance is imperative. For students to remain compliant with state law and school requirements, students must complete the required instructional hours each week (28 hours) and communicate with their homeroom teacher. Failure to do so could result in being reported as truant. Please review the attached PPT along with the updated NCA School Handbook to familiarize yourself with our Truancy Process. Preferred Pronouns Update - All students now have access to the Affirmed Pronouns Data View. This Data View allows students to choose to have their pronouns appear on their Student Log page. Caretakers - If your student enters a selection in the Affirmed Pronouns field of the Student Log Page, that activity will trigger a notification to you via WebMail. As your student’s Caretaker, you will be required to accept or reject the request for the Affirmed Pronouns to display on the Student Log Page for school stakeholders to view. Only accepted notifications will result in Affirmed Pronouns appearing on a Student Log Page. Students- Please note that this process is separate from the google form that we shared with you earlier this school year. If you submitted your preferred pronouns through the Google Form, the preferred pronouns were added to your Student Log Page but were not added to the Data View. You are welcome to add them to the Data View if you would like. Whole School Live Lesson - The Whole School Live Lesson is being adjusted to an open office hour session with NCA’s Leadership Team. Caretakers and students are welcome to attend if you have specific questions that the Leadership Team can answer for you. These open office hours will begin on February 6th at 11:30am and will be held each Monday after. Hello NCA Bears! Welcome to a new week! I hope your weekend was filled with everything you needed it to be. We are just about three weeks into the semester, which means you should have over 80 lessons complete by the end of the week. How are you doing? Are you on track? Have you fallen behind? Take some time this week to assess your progress. Here’s a quick way to check: -Go into your grade book -Identify the column that says “Lesson Completion” -Identify the row that says “Overall” -This is where you will find how many lessons you’ve completed out of how many lessons you will be completing this semester. This number should be over 80 by the end of the week in order to be considered “on track”. Please note, if you did not start the semester with us on the first day of the semester, your number will be lower than 80. If you need help determining your number, please reach out to your home room teacher. Keeping an eye on your lesson completion throughout the semester will ensure that you remain on track and finish your courses by the end of the semester. Attendance - Be sure to get your attendance submitted for the week by filling out the form below. Typically you take this during your Junior year. More information regarding testing dates and locations will be shared soon! Escalation Activation - Our escalation system gets turned back on today (1/23). This means that you may go into alarm/approaching alarm. No need to worry though. This typically happens to our escalation system after it’s turned off for long breaks. Please note that this will take a few days to balance out. Your teachers will continue to hold calls, LiveLessons and will be monitoring your progress as usual. Temporary Zeros - Starting Wednesday (1/25), your teachers will be adding in temporary zeros for all overdue assignments. Entering of temporary zeros will occur each Monday and will be added to assignments that are a week (or more) overdue. Please know that this is not something done to penalize students, it’s a practice we use to help students understand where their grade would be should they choose not to submit that particular assignment. Grades are not finalized until the semester has been completed and temporary zeros are removed once the assignment is completed. Star 360 Benchmark Testing - The final round of Star 360 Benchmark Testing is here for our 9th & 10th graders! A NCA staff member will be reaching out to schedule your tests. Your performance on these benchmarks helps us identify the growth made since the beginning of the year and gives us insight into the areas we need to focus more on during the remainder of the year. Please be sure to have your webcams, headphones and a positive attitude ready to go. You can do it! February 20th - No School - Presidents' Day February 25th - Final ACT Boot Camp for the 2022-2023 School Year Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Have a wonderful week! Hello NCA Bears! Each year, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the third Monday of January. This allows us to honor his life and legacy. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986. The first time all states observed it wasn’t until 2000. Had Dr. King not been assassinated in 1968, he could have been celebrating his 94th birthday this past Sunday. In June, a few members of our Leadership Team had the opportunity to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in DC, which opened in 2011. What a remarkable site it was. I included a picture of the monument you see when you first enter. We were speechless as we walked through the memorial and were so thankful to have had the chance to experience this on our trip To conclude, I wanted to share a few facts with you about Dr. King that you may not already know: Dr. King's Birth Name Was Michael, Not Martin - King Sr. was inspired by a Protestant Reformation Leader which led him to changing his own name as well as Dr. King Jr’s name. He entered college at the age of 15 - Dr. King was a gifted student, which allowed him to skip grades 9-12. Dr. King received His Doctorate in Systematic Theology His 'I Have a Dream' Speech Was Not His First At the Lincoln Memorial - His first speech at the Lincoln Memorial was given six years prior. Dr. King Was Imprisoned Nearly 30 Times - He was arrested for acts of civil disobedience and on trumped-up charges, such as when he was jailed in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1956 for driving 30 miles per hour in a 25-mile-per-hour zone.
